I’ve started looking into Windows Phone 8 development. More out of curiosity than anything, as I don’t have an Windows Phone (I’m an Android guy). I just wanted to see what it was all about. I tinkered around last night and got a little app working. You can see it on Github here. If it looks familiar, it’s a re-write of a Windows Form app I did a while back. I didn’t find it much different than creating a WPF XAML app for desktop, really. The interesting thing is the SDK. It requires Hyper-V which means I couldn’t run it on my desktop as I have and use VMware for my virtualization needs. Hyper-V is a type 1 hypervisor which doesn’t get along with VMware’s type 2 hypervisor on the same machine. Luckily, I was able to find this little tidbit that allows me to run Hyper-V in a VMware guest, so I’m running the SDK’s emulator as a nested VM. Performance isn’t great, but it got the job done.
My first app is crude, but it works. I’m sure I’ll tinker with it more and see if I can come up with something more polished, and useful. I find it hardest to come up with app ideas.
