ESV Study Bible + for iOS

I have used quite a few electronic Bibles, such as YouVersion and a few other apps. Although I have a preference for physical Bibles (and books in general), there are times when it's handy to have an electronic Bible that's always in my pocket, on my phone.

I soon decided that I wanted a 'Study Bible' that I could carry with me electronically in case I ever needed to consult some commentary on a passage. I tried a few Kindle e-book Study Bibles such as: The ESV MacArthur Study Bible, The NIV Study Bible and The HCSB Study Bible. I had purchased all of these when they were on sale, so I didn't pay much for them, and each one left me disappointed both using my actual Kindle as well as the Kindle app on my phone. They were great if you were just reading the text (although harder to navigate than any of the Bible 'apps'), but on all three it was pretty frustrating to try and switch between the Bible text and the commentary.

The description from the app store states:

The ESV Study Bible at your fingertips. Carry your ESV Study Bible with you wherever, whenever, and share with whomever you want! Crossway is excited to provide:

• The highly regarded content of the ESV Study Bible which includes:
-20,000 notes-focused on especially understanding the Bible
-2 million words of Bible text and insightful teaching
-Over 50 articles
-Over 200 full-color maps
-200-plus charts
-80,000 cross-references
-40 new illustrations
• Audio. ESV Bible Audio to supplement your bible readings (Internet connection Required)
• Use. Offers a fantastic user experience. Finding a verse is fast and easy. Just click the Browse button.
• Read. Scroll through the entire Bible in landscape or full screen modes and enlarge or shrink font sizes to fit your needs. The ESV Bible App emulates the same unique typography users encounter with print versions of the ESV.
• Search. Ever had a verse on the tip of your tongue but can’t remember where it’s found? Search for it with the Bible App’s comprehensive concordance.
• Write. With the ability to record notes, you can capture your thoughts and observations in a sermon or personal Bible study.
• Highlight. Highlight verses by simply pressing on them. Save them in your favorites for future reference.
• Share. Share verses with friends and family
• Manage. Add, delete, or reorder your verse favorites. Save your own user-defined preferences.

I couldn't be more satisfied. Sure, it doesn't have a gazillion translations like the other Bible apps do, but it does have a nice font (the same as other ESV Bible's published by Crossway), easy navigation and most importantly all of the resources from the great ESV Study Bible  plus it is super easy to navigate between the Bible text and the commentary.

If you own a physical ESV Study Bible you have access to the resources online at http://www.esvbible.org/ it's much easier to navigate and use all of the features on your phone with the app vs. using the mobile web.

If you are an iPhone user, I have no issues with recommending this app -- I feel it's well worth the $14.99 price tag.

  1. Thanks jayson for posting this blog. In many cases people don’t spend time connecting with the almighty, but daily Bible reading should be an important part of every Christian’s life. Through bible app for iphone, you can read and study easily.
